What time to power means for AI data centers
Time to power is how long a data center waits for usable electricity. It often decides where AI capacity is built, and how long that takes.
Time to power is the time between choosing a site and having usable electricity at it. It has become the deciding factor for many AI projects, because idle GPUs cost far more than the electricity that runs them.
Why it got harder
Almost any large new load now requires a grid upgrade. In Texas, the grid operator’s large-load queue grew from 63 GW at the end of 2024 to 474 GW by June 2026, more than five times record peak demand, and about 90% of it was data centers, according to a16z. The same analysis says fully connecting a large data center can take 5 to 10 years, and that Texas has paused new permits while an audit runs.
What it means when choosing a site
- Ask what has actually been studied, not just what has been requested.
- Ask whether capacity can be delivered in phases.
- Ask who pays for upgrades and what deposits apply. New Texas rules charge a $100,000 study fee and a $50,000 per MW deposit, according to the same source.
The smaller-load angle
A smaller load on existing transmission may need less new infrastructure than a very large campus, though this depends on the local grid and must be confirmed by a utility study in every case.
